Ground Flax Seed

When I first started using ground flax as an egg substitute many years ago I spent alot of money purchasing the seeds already ground and I used regular old brown flax seed.

Eventually I decided to try and grind my own – I threw them in my wheat grinder and in a matter of minutes I had a profound mess on my hands and a grinder that would no longer work! Thanks to my DH, who can fix just about anything, he was able to take it  apart, clean it out and get it working again – it still works today!

I had resigned myself to purchasing the more expensive already ground products when I ran into an older woman at a health food store when I was visiting my parents.  She saw me placing a bag of the ground flax in my cart and came over to me. She said all I had to do was put the whole flax seeds in my blender and give ‘em a whirl – wa la – ground flax seed. She also tipped me off to using golden flax – not readily available then like it is now.  I scooped up a bunch that day and ran home to give it a try – I’ve been grinding my own flax ever since!
